Drawn to Paper: Gwen John to Arshile Gorky
Piano Nobile’s summer exhibition of works on paper returns with watercolour, pencil, crayon, chalk, charcoal and other graphic media used by significant British, European and American artists of the twentieth century.
Graphic, linear media reveal an artist and their sensibility more fully than larger, often more studied and ‘edited’ works of art. Much like handwriting, such artworks reveal an inalienable quality that speak of an artist’s personality. Whether intended as preparatory or presentation works, an artist’s drawings often underpin the style and process of their art.
The display includes work by Frank Auerbach, Arshile Gorky, Barbara Hepworth, Augustus John, Gwen John, Leon Kossoff, Henry Moore and Stanley Spencer.
