Soutine and British Painting

Piano Nobile, 2025
Digital Publication
Publisher: Piano Nobile Publications

The publication Soutine and British Painting explores the interconnections between Chaïm Soutine and twentieth-century British painting and accompanies the exhibition of the same name.

With notable examples of Soutine’s work, including one of his Céret landscapes, the exhibition Soutine & British Painting uses a mixture of comparison and juxtaposition to reflect on his direct inspiration of artists such as Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud and Leon Kossoff, as well as the broader similarities of style and approach that can be detected in the work of David Bomberg, Peter Coker and Paula Rego.

The publication includes a fully-illustrated catalogue of the artworks, and an introductory essay which charts Soutine's influence on key twentieth-century British painters, including Kossoff, Auerbach, and Kitaj. A further essay focuses on Soutine's painting Les Platanes à Céret, his early years as an emerging painter and his time spent in the French town of Céret.
