Walter Sickert: Working Notes at Charleston

Exhibition created in partnership with Piano Nobile

Following Piano Nobile's exhibition Sickert: Love, Death & Ennui. The Herbert and Ann Lucas Collection, Charleston is working in partnership with the gallery to create their upcoming exhibition Walter Sickert: Working Notes.

The show brings together works formerly of the Herbert and Ann Lucas Collection, much of which illustrates the process of translation by which Sickert migrated imagery through several iterations in different media. This was one of the definitive aspects of his practice and distinguishes him as one of the outstanding artists of his generation, whose processes of replication and serialisation anticipate significant artistic developments later in the twentieth century.  The large group of prints includes important examples from every period of Sickert’s career as a printmaker. Ever restless to experiment, he mastered a variety of media and deployed them in unexpected combinations.
