Peter Lanyon vase acquired for the National Museum of Wales

Cardiff

Piano Nobile is delighted to announce the purchase of a Peter Lanyon ceramic vase for the National Museum of Wales. It has been acquired for the Museum by the Derek William Trust. The Museum already owns Beach Girl (1961) by Lanyon, and this vase is the first ceramic by the artist to enter a public collection.

This vase is a delicate and sophisticated example of post-war British pottery. Just twenty-nine ceramics by Peter Lanyon have been identified and attributed to the artist, and this work of glazed earthenware is a rare and jewel-like example in his oeuvre. Its delicate layers of green and black glaze evoke an atmospheric landscape, closely related to those which appear in the artist’s paintings of Cornwall.

Peter Lanyon has recently been a subject of discussion in the art world. A catalogue raisonné of his work by Toby Treves was published by Modern Art Press in February 2018. In November 2018, a painting by Lanyon sold at auction for more than £1 million. Lanyon was one of the British artists to blur abstraction and figuration in Cornwall after the Second World War. His work is held in many UK public collections.
