The present work has recently come to light, having been privately owned, out of the public eye for many decades.
Dr Wendy Baron suggests that the composition may depict rue St Rémy, Dieppe where Sickert was friends with the grandfather of the owner of the shop depicted here. Michael Barker concurs, suggesting that the location could be the corner of rue St Rémy and rue Aguado, facing the north side of the church of St Rémy in the quartier St Rémy.
We are grateful to Dr Wendy Baron and to Michael Barker for their assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
