The present work is a view that Bomberg painted and drew a number of times whilst in Jerusalem, yet, along with the Mount
Zion with the Church of the Dormition: Moonlight (Coll. Ben Uri Gallery, London), it is probably amongst the most freely
painted. The viewpoint has also been shifted much further back than in most of his depictions of the view, thus reducing the
buildings to small eye-catching patches of colour within the overall network of walls and pathways that build up the central
section of the image. Bomberg would use this same technique in the future when painting small sketches of the outskirts of
towns, as for instance in Hills Beyond Toledo of 1929.Provenance
