This intimate depiction of a nude woman just finishing her bath is thematically related to what Timothy Hyman has called “arguably [Bonnard’s] culminating achievement,” his much celebrated series of Baignoires (Bonnard, London, 1998, p. 190). In particular, our drawing has points of contact with a number of the artist’s nude women near a bath tub. In all likelihood, the bather is Maria (called “Marthe”) Boursin (1869-1942), Bonnard’s longtime mistress and model whom he married in 1925.
