Biography

Christopher Bramham (b. 1952)

Painter and teacher born in Bradford, Yorkshire. Although his father was a news-agent and his mother was a school dinner lady, who split up when Bramham was young, he.was enabled to spend some time at a preparatory school, but failed Common Entrance. An old part-work magazine inspired Bramham to be an artist. He attended Bradford College of Art, 1970;  his desire for a more traditional teaching and to work from nature took him to Kingston School of Art, 1971-3, after which he was a part-time teacher in schools, 1974-86, by now with a family and hard up. A meeting with Lucian Freud in 1982 led to Bramham showing with Agnew, although he was several times rejected by the RA, so he became disillusioned with fi the selection procedure.

Had a show with Fine Art Society in 1988, then from 1992 had a series of highly successful exhibitions with Marlborough Fine Art, craftsmanlike and intense landscapes, still lifes and interiors. Bramham admired Freud (who owned his work and painted him and his family), Bacon, Andrews, Auerbach and among foreign artist Giacometti, Picasso and Matisse. Lived in Richmond, Surrey.
