Modern British Masters (III): Selected Highlights

29 May - 20 June 2018 Piano Nobile
Summary

Continuing a series of exhibitions on the theme, Piano Nobile presents a display of Modern British Masters. Stretching from the birth of modern art at the beginning of the twentieth century through the blossoming of abstraction in the 1930s, and to painting and sculpture created in the aftermath of the Second World War, this exhibition illustrates the impressive diversity and innovation that characterises the very best modern British art.

Including major oils by Walter Sickert, David Bomberg, and Duncan Grant the display showcases the finest painting of the period. Foremost painters like Paul Nash and Ivon Hitchens feature alongside later artists who epitomise the flourishing of British art in the fifties and sixties. The particular strength of British sculpture in the post-war era is demonstrated by important works by Kenneth Armitage, Anthony Caro, Elizabeth Frink, and Reg Butler.
